Stucco Hacienda, Santa Barbara, 1967

Heavy impasto oil with palette knife & brush on Masonite board, 40" x 60". The driftwood treetrunk in the left foreground provides the natural organic forms that Schwaderer liked to contrast with the powerful geometrics of man-made buildings; the mountains and fields are out of proportion to the Pacific Ocean in the background. This distortion effect was one of the important elements in Schwaderer's landscape paintings.
