Breaking and Joining - Sculpture

Session One, Class Five

This was the last class of the first session. There were two moiré skills to give to the class for them to be able to build sculptures.

First, we gave out a photo to each child – a photo of them working with clay during one of the previous classes. After enjoying their own photo and seeing others, we gave out the ClayPlay Kits to each child. These kits include clay, safely wrapped in a plastic bag, a tiny cup for water, and an .

Then we distributed the clay and demonstrated breaking it into small pieces and joining the pieces together. Special attention was placed on how to join the clay to itself so it wouldn't fall apart. This was accomplished by wet fingers and small amounts of water. This was our first introduction of water to the class.

In this class Bobby made a fountain, Gabriel made a push-pot and forged on ahead doing new and creative exploratory ideas, Zoe took on the job of the group sculpture. Bella broke her clay into many different pieces and put it back together again, and then rolled it out flat and cut it into many pieces. Erin and her parents, just freshly arrived from the Stories n' ArtPlay class, where pond life has been a topic of interest for the five week session, populated a pond with a turtle, a snail, duck, mouse and various unidentified creatures. Nadia made a mountain and other sculptures, and her brother Brahim pounded and rolled his clay with glee. Katelyn was invited to deconstruct her adult friends' creations, which she accomplished robustly.

Our oldest child told us that he wanted to show us teachers how to make a bowl, in the manner which he had discovered at home. His mother reported that she especially enjoyed the mood of the ClayPlay classes. When her son became overly-excited at home, he went to the clay supplies she had provided for him and brought forth the serene and concentrated mood of the space; she felt this had helped him through some difficult and rambunctious moments.

Parents filled out commentary forms while their children worked on their clay and this final class of the first five-week series finished with lots of appreciation and enthusiasm.
